Do you have ADHD? Chinese Herbs can help.

"The total number of Americans with ADHD [Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder] continues to rise — up from 7.8 percent in 2003 to 9.5 percent in 2007 and 11 percent in 2011," according to the website ADDitude; Inside the ADHD mind.

In Chinese Medicine terms, the symptoms of ADHD are part of a pattern known as Phlegm Obstructing the Orifices of the Heart.

Chinese Medicine is an ancient system of healing that seeks to bring balance to the body so that it can heal itself. Chinese Herbalism is the cornerstone of Chinese Medicine and several Chinese Herbal formulas address the pattern of Phlegm Obstructing the Orifices of the Heart.

An 1800 year old herbal formula called Gan Mai Da Zao Tang has been used for centuries to effectively treat Phlegm Obstructing the Orifices of the Heart. This formula has no side effects and is made from natural ingredients such as licorice root, tumeric, and jujubes. Here's a review of Gan Mai Da Zao Wan (MooDelight™) from ActiveHerb.com:

"Excellent!!! I purchased this for my 7 yr old son who is on the Autistic Spectrum. I was hoping it would be just a little less calming than Plum Flower's Dragonbone and Oystershell [Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Tang, listed below]. I've heard very positive things about Acorus being used with Autistic individuals. I am NOT disappointed. All of his "ADHD" symptoms seem..."quelled". He's a bit more calmer and ...easier. I'm really pleased with this formula! As usual, there are days when more is needed, and certainly, I need to keep up with his schedule, diet, and sensory stuff - but overall? This formula makes a significant difference! I would comfortably say that if your child experiences some anger/oppositional defiant behavior as well, than this may not be the root you're looking for, but for those with traditional ADHD...this is fantastic."

Gan Mai Da Zao Tang is also used to treat anxiety.

The herbal formula An Shen Bu Xin Tang is also used for the pattern of Phlegm Obstructing the Orifices of the Heart. Here are a few reviews of An Shen Bu Xin Pian (Wan) (SpiritCalm™) from ActiveHerb.com:

"Fantastic Results! I have an adopted son who was born addicted to several illegal substances. He was adopted at birth and is now 13 years old. He has always had a difficult time focusing, calming himself when he perceives everything is going wrong, he was high-strung, and often could not sleep. This product has helped in every one of those areas. He is now calm, focused, able to think clearly, and no longer has uncontrollable tantrums. These are fantastic results and he reminds me when it is time for him to take his An Shen!!"

"Love it! I bought this for my son who has ADHD and has been on many conventional medications. I was afraid of their side effects. But this has worked wonders for him with no dangerous side effects. Thank you."

"It's been the second time I bought An Shen as I want to continue with it for my son and me. It helps my son with his tics and calms him down significantly. I hope It will help me with my anxious and intrusive thoughts, too. And maybe with depression."

Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon recommends a formula similar to Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Tang to settle hyperactivity in ADHD patients. Here are a few amazing reviews of Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Pian (Wan) (NeuroSoothe™) from ActiveHerb.com that do not refer to ADHD but give you an indication of the formula's settling effects:

"U.S Marine Veteran with PTSD. I started using this once I dedicated myself to sobriety from drugs and alcohol. Being a U.S Marine Combat veteran with P.T.S.D, I used to use alcohol mainly to overcome stress from war.. However, since I have began taking this product I have noticed a significant drop in the levels of anxiousness and also sleep much more peacefully throughout the night. Nothing in my life has helped me quite like this herb (coupled with the "Spirit Calm") and I couldn't be more happy. Thank you!"

"Live life with flow and ease. When I take this, I feel as if energy circulates within my body freely. It reminds me of how I felt when I was a kid - that effortless flow of energy throughout the body - feeling. This reduces a sense of tension - that I sometimes get, for example, jaw muscle tension and muscle twitching. When I am at work, I feel a sense of focus and engagement with my work - it replaces a certain sense of apathy that I sometimes feel towards my work with passion and excitement. Highly recommended for anyone who lives a busy life."

"I was suffering with bouts of depression. Just quite not centered if you may. I went to my PCP for help. That was the beginning of a very bad month long decision I had made and with the rising cost of health insurance, a nightmare. I was put on Paxil. Dangerous, very dangerous and armed with very little education on this drug I started to take it. The nightmares, the restlessnes, no sleep spells started. So did the follow ups with the Doctor. $500 later I had enough and was no better than when I went in. I got educated with Eastern Medicine and was leary but ready to try something . I found these herbs and had education handed to me by an herbologist in my area. One month later, I am off Western Drugs and am on these Herbs. Difference of night and day. And, all without side effects. I can't recommend this enough."

And finally, here's a YouTube presentation by neurologist Dr. Tseng, MD, AOM, on the treatment of children with ADHD and/or Autism with diet and traditional Chinese medicine. Dr. Tseng recommends that ADHD sufferers avoid foods that cause the stomach to be overheated (in the TCM sense), such as chocolate, butter, milk, nuts, fine sugar, lamb, and beef. She also recommends avoiding foods that cause stagnation (in the TCM sense), such as apples, bananas, strawberries, wheat products, salads, soda, and cold drinks. She recommends eating rice, cooked vegetables, chicken, and pork to 'promote Qi movement' (note that this is typically most of what you'll find on the menu at any Chinese restaurant).

Other mental health imbalances can also be properly treated using other Chinese Herbs with the help of a Chinese Herbalist.
